Sarah

My name is Sarah
I am but three,
My eyes are swollen
I cannot see,

I must be stupid,
I must be bad,
What else could have made
My daddy so mad?

I wish I were better,
I wish I weren't ugly,
Then maybe my Mommy
Would still want to hug me.

I can't speak at all,
I can't do a wrong
Or else I'm locked up
All the day long.

When I awake I'm all alone
The house is dark
My folks aren't home.

When my Mommy does come
I'll try and be nice,
So maybe I'll get just
One whipping tonight.

Don't make a sound!
I just heard a car
My daddy is back
From Charlie's Bar.

I hear him curse
My name he calls
I press myself
Against the wall.

I try and hide
From his evil eyes
I'm so afraid now
I'm starting to cry.

He finds me weeping
He shouts ugly words,
He says its my fault
That he suffers at work.

He slaps me and hits me
And yells at me more,
I finally get free
And I run for the door.

He's already locked it
And I start to bawl,
He takes me and throws me
Against the hard wall.

I fall to the floor
With my bones nearly broken,
And my daddy continues
With more bad words spoken.

"I'm sorry!", I scream
But its now much too late
His face has been twisted
Into unimaginable hate.

The hurt and the pain
Again and again
Oh please God, have mercy!
Oh please let it end!

And he finally stops
And heads for the door,
While I lay there motionless
Sprawled on the floor.

My name is Sarah
And I am but three,
Tonight my daddy
Murdered me.

There are thousands of kids out there just like Sarah.

Please pass this poem on as a Blue Ribbon Against Child Abuse because as crazy as it might sound, it might just indirectly change a life. Hey, you NEVER know.

By supporting Childhelp, you are playing a direct role in the treatment and prevention of child abuse. Your donations, purchases from the Childhelp store and the Gift of Hope gift catalogue, and time spent volunteering help a dedicated and passionate staff carry out Childhelp's mission of meeting the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of abused and neglected children.

    SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Have you ever seen a child who fell down and got hurt, and the child seemed so terrified, bleeding and hysterical.  This can be typical for a child who has been hurt.  Take a moment and etch this image in your mind..................
Now, what's the first thing we do when we see a child in this situation?  We run to their rescue, hold them, calm them, comfort them and access their injuries.  And if the injuries are severe enough, of course we seek immediate medical attention.

Now imagine this child all alone, and you can see this child from a distance, but you are unable to assist that child, or call for help to rescue the child.  Not knowing the seriousness of the child's injury, and not being able to help this child...think about it, how would you feel?

I'm sure you people have watched some of the crime investigative shows on television, and see the horrific traumas so many people experience from being assaulted and murdered.  Now think on this for a moment....

Now imagine a helpless, precious and innocent child being all alone with a perpetrator, let's say this child was abducted by a pedophile and murderer.  Try to imagine the horror in this child's mind, and the desperation and the confusion of what's going on, and why.  Many of you are survivors of sexual abuse or childhood abuse, so I hope this isn't too graphic.  I think it's necessary to get the point across.

Now imagine this child, a 5 year old girl, in the capture of a pedophile, terrified, horrified, scared to death.  Not knowing or understanding why or what is going on she cries.  The perpetrator wants the child to be quiet, and strikes her several times to cause her to remain quiet.  The perpetrator is angered, and he is selfish, has no regard for human life, he has captured a body for his pleasure and considers her disposable.  He has learned to turn off his emotions and regard for human suffering.  He just wants one thing, and nothing else matters to this mad man.

The perpetrator sexually assaults this child for a period of time.  Imagine the horror going on in her mind.  What is she thinking?  She wishes that mommy or daddy was there to protect her, why?  She doesn't understand.  At some point, she goes into a mental shut down.  She feels the pain, and she wants it to stop.  She can't contain herself, she cries, and again the perpetrator beats her, this time harder.  The child goes quiet again.

Such a young life to suffer such a trauma.  She's in serious pain, and has been molested and physically beaten.  When it's over she's still terrified.  She's thinking "how can this terrible man do this?"  Why me?  Why doesn't someone help me?

The perpetrator has pre-determined that he will have to dispose of his victim.  So he strangles her, and beats her.  It takes a few minutes for one to die from strangulation.  This poor helpless, innocent child, a picture of life, a child of God is feeling pain and horror at the hands of a man 20 times her strength.  The child finally succumbs to the strangulation, she is dead.  I ASK MYSELF, WHY?  WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?  HOW CAN WE ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE?  WHAT CAN WE DO TO STOP THIS MADNESS.

The parents are terrified at the thoughts of what might happen to their precious child, but with hopes that she will be ok.  Then, the knock on the door.  The officer at the door has the story written all over his face.  He has to confirm their worse fears.

A murdered innocent child, a devastated family, a troubled community, and a murderer and pedophile on the loose.  The most horrible situation imaginable.

This happens so often.  I will post more statistics after this next story.  THIS IS REAL, AND THIS HAPPENS TO OUR CHILDREN EVERY DAY.
  • 1,500 children die every year from child abuse and neglect. That is just over 4 fatalities every day.
  • 79% of the children killed are younger than 4.
